if you are using xp..click on start..then set program access and defaults..scroll down to video and pick what you want to use and apply.

If you click on (what used to be the Start button) in vista, click "Default Programs," click "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program," click on the file types that you want (hold down the Ctrl key to select more than one at a time), click on the "Change program" button and select VLC.
